Crossing the Finish Line: Celebrating New Standard Finish Formulas

Vermont Plank Pickled White Finish on White Oak

Applying quality finish to hardwood flooring is a complex enterprise in which the finisher endeavors to create a product that will both bring out the exquisite beauty of the wood beneath, while at the same time creating a chemical formulation that will protect that beauty for decades to come.

For 30 years, the finishing shop at Vermont Plank Flooring has worked its magic and technical expertise on several million board feet, one client at a time, creating countless custom finishes using a veritable smorgasbord of “ingredients” in myriad combinations.  Like wizards at the cauldron, they’ve stirred together shellac, tung oil, water-based urethane, aluminum oxide, Danish oils, stain, hard waxes, sealants, tints, resins, solvents, oil-based urethane, catalysts, and pigments to enhance natural wood’s beauty and durability again and again. It’s a laborious process, but also a labor of love.

And now, VTPF is pleased to unveil, for the first time in its history, a selection of standard finish formulas based on the most beautiful and popular custom options produced at VTPF’s finish shop.

The New Standard: The Contemporary Collection

Select White Oak Pickled White

The half-dozen colorations – which includes Pickled White, Graphite, Coffee, Classic Brown, Farmhouse, and Natural – were created for application specifically on VTPF’s most popular product, white oak flooring, though formulations for other species are likely in the offing. These custom selections can be used both on solid hardwood or on engineered options, as well as on either character or select grades, and with either plain sawn or quarter sawn preferences.

The exquisite beauty of these standard finishes is coupled with their unparalleled durability. A unique NANO finishing technology provides extreme protection against wear and scratching. The six-coat process strategically applies layers of protective aluminum and ceramic coating particulates that enhance the durability – providing 33% greater wear abrasion protection than standard aluminum oxide performance – without compromising the esthetic beauty of the natural wood tones and grain patterns, regardless of the chosen sheen level.

Receive Your Custom Floor Faster

The other advantages of standard formulas relate to efficiency – notably its impact on production speed and cost. By standardizing the process, your order can move along through the finish process at a faster pace than will an order relying on customization. And with that accelerated pace comes a corollary reduction in cost.
