OUR STORY
THREE GENERATIONS
Like most American business stories, Vermont Plank Flooring was born of a degree of foresight, a little bit of luck, and a lot of hard work.
Our involvement in the wood business started in 1946 when Jack Tarmy started driving a lumber truck making deliveries in the Boston area. By 1958, he had his own company, selling the finest New England timber to customers around the world.
Jack’s son Mark joined the company in 1976, helping it grow roots in a community and supply chain that persists to this day. In 1989, Mark shifted the company’s focus from wholesale timber to custom-milled, wide-plank flooring. His family’s existing relationships with local woodsmen proved to be an invaluable, and unbeatable, asset. Vermont Plank Flooring isn’t just lumber: it’s the product of a local supply chain built on decades of trust.
It took his son George a few years to join the family business after college. First, he cut his teeth in the tech industry, working for startups in Chicago and California. But even as he did so, he still kept one foot back in Vermont, consulting for the business, working with his dad on strategy, and, of course, singing the praises of VTPF wherever he went.
Eventually, George and his growing family decided to make it official. They moved back to Vermont full-time, and together, George and Mark continue to carry out Jack’s guiding principle: the best product for the best price.
